History: Fairly simple, normal family. Dad was army, but retired from that and ended up running his own bar. Mom did a bit of part time work there until Katie was old enough for school, at which point she went back to work in a bank (like she had done until she took a break to have kids). Katie was outgoing and enthusiastic pretty much from the womb, determined to play along with anything Jo and Chris were doing and introducing herself happily to any friend they brought home. As a child she was tomboyish but in an oddly girlie way – while she’d insist on getting bought kiddy tool kits like her older brother had had she’d also make cute eyes until she got the latest Barbie. As she grew up the whole ‘feminine tomboy’ thing continued and as a teen she’d merrily work with Dad on his car (she could never get Chris to let her near his, no matter how good she got) all day Saturday and get good and covered in grease, then promptly shower, dress up pretty and go dancing. College was never even a thought for her – she wanted to work with engines, end of story. She took a part-time job with a local garage in her senior year and got made permanent within two weeks of graduating. She loves her work. And she still insists on getting bought the latest Barbie. She'd been...being friendly...with then-mechanic, Bester when Mal had come to check on an on-going problem that was keeping the ship grounded. When Bester began to explain the problem Kaylee interjected, corrected him and fixed it in roughly twenty seconds. Mal offered her a job, fired Bester and the rest was history. Kaylee was in many ways the 'heart' of Serenity. She added a lot of homey touches to it, was always warm and bright and optimistic and determined to get people rallying together. She was the most welcoming to new arrivals and the one most likely to encourage the crew not to get into bickering and squabbling. When Simon came aboard as a passenger Kaylee developed a puppy crush pretty much instanteously, even though he was cold, standoffish and suspicious. This crush developed over the months he was on-board and when, following a robbery Mal had insisted on taking River along on, the Tams decided to go their own way Kaylee was heartbroken. They were soon reunited, however, and as the ship's crew made a stand against the Alliance and the Reavers Simon admitted his one regret was never 'being with' Kaylee. When both survived the ensuing battle Kaylee was very, very pleased to get some very pretty sex out of the deal.
